 Dear Parent,

Today’s culture offers many physical activity choices for children, yet there is an alarming trend of inactivity among our youth. While children represent the most fit and active section of our society, there is concern that kids may not be active enough to ensure future health benefits.

Physical activity and other health behaviors are usually established during childhood and adolescence. Youth should accumulate at least 60 minutes and up to several hours of age appropriate physical activity on most days of the week, and should participate in several bouts of physical activity lasting 15 minutes or more each day.

Exposing your son or daughter to a variety of physical activities has many benefits that may help increase physical activity patterns in life. You will be helping them become confident movers who understand and appreciate physical activity. They will develop a variety of physical skills and movement pattern skills they will need to remain healthy and active for a lifetime. Children do not always understand what attracts them to new activities, so parents can help children discover new activities that fit their personalities.

Many youth sports provide positive effects that can last a lifetime. Some of those extracurricular activities include playing traditional organized sports such as baseball/softball, soccer or basketball. Today’s youth also have a wide variety of non-traditional type youth activities to choose from such as BMX, mountain biking, dancing, gymnastics and tennis and golf. If kids are exposed at an early age, these activities can bring immense enjoyment and feelings of self-worth!
