ENGLISH 101       
CAP Course Information
 

COURSE DESCRIPTION:
This course is designed to help students acquire the skills they will need for overall academic success. They will learn to produce essays that are clear, concise, and unified. The writing process is emphasized during this course. Students write papers in class, as well as out of class, at least one of which requires outside sources and documentation. Near the end of the course, students will complete a final timed in-class essay which will be evaluated by the CCC English Department to assess the writer's preparedness to move on to other college-level writing courses.

COURSE PREREQUISITE:
Successful completion of ENG 094, placement into ENG 101 based on the results of the Placement Test, or exemption from the Placement Test on the basis of a standardized test such as SAT or ACT, or high school teacher recommendation.

 

This is a composition course and the majority of student work will be writing essays of various types.

ALL work in this course is submitted electronically and students must have basic computing skills.

PLACEMENT

 Interested students must have:

  • 80 overall GPA  AND

  • 90 or above on English Regents  or 

  • 21 on ACT Eng  or

  • 500 on SAT Eng  or

  • appropriate level of proficiency on CCC Placement Exam (see rubric)

The placement exam will be held at Peru HS during the first two weeks of the semester...date and time pending.  Students may begin the course, then take the placement exam and remain or withdraw as necessary.

COST

  • The cost for CAP courses offered at Peru is approximately $60 + fees

  • CAP English 101 is a 3-credit course

  • The payment due date is usually the fourth week of class.

  • Course instructor does not handle payment.

 

TEXTBOOKS

Peru Central School provides the textbooks free to students in the course--
but the books must be returned unmarked and undamaged. 

  • If a student wishes to purchase the textbooks to keep and/or write in,
    this may be done through the Clinton Community College Bookstore, at www.clinton.edu or from other sources.

  • Peru Central School does not sell books or profit from book sales.

  • Students may purchase books, if they so desire,  but student-purchased books MUST be the same edition as is used in class (see below) AND MUST be brought to class the first day.

CREDIT

This course is offered for dual-credit (PCS and CCC). 
Students may not audit this course.

Successful completion of this course earns 3 cr. for ENG 101 at Clinton Community College
-- this is SUNY credit and may or may not transfer to other institutions.

  • The college credit for this course IS NOT the same credit as may have been earned by taking AP English Literature in grade 11. 

  • AP English Literature credits may or may not satisfy a college's Eng 101 requirement.
    Students who took and received credit for AP English MAY take and receive credit for CAP English 101.

  • Successful completion of this course also offers 1/2 cr. toward the NYS requirement for 4 years of English. 

  • CAP English 101 will be offered to SENIORS ONLY.

  • It is very important to note that if a student takes and does not pass
    CAP English 101 as the second of the two required 1/2 year courses for English 12 in the Spring, the student
    WILL NOT
    have completed the necessary requirements for Peru Central School Graduation in June. If there is any doubt that the student is capable of passing the CAP ENG 101 course, the student should also take another English 12 course in order to graduate on time!
     

COURSE PLACE, TIME , INSTRUCTOR, AND SYLLABUS

  • The CAP English 101 course will be held in room H206 (new English 12 room) at Peru HS. 
    Students do not need to travel outside of the school building to take this course. 

  • The Spring 2010 course is offered one period only- but there is one course section in Fall and one section offered in Spring. 

  • Office hours for the course instructor are 10th period, so a student with early dismissal
     may be asked to stay after school for 10th period regularly and should plan other schedules accordingly (sports and work).

  • The course is taught by a Peru HS English teacher who is also Adjunct Faculty by Clinton Community College. 

  • The course instructor does not receive any extra compensation, above and beyond Peru salary, from either CCC or PCS for preparing and teaching this course.

  • The course syllabus and content have been developed by the instructor and
    have been approved by the Clinton Community College English Department.
