The History of the Peru Central School's K-2 Reading Program: |

A research-based

In June of 2006, Peru Central School District was awarded a Reading First grant. With this exciting news came the realization that there was much to be done if the new reading program was to be ready for the children of Peru as they entered their classrooms in September. There were textbooks and supplies to be ordered, professional development to design and attend, and classrooms to be adjusted. After much dedication and hard work, however, the K-3 administration, faculty, and staff at Peru designed an explicit and systematic program based on 30 minutes of core reading instruction and 60 minutes of shared reading and individualized center-based instruction. In addition to this, the reading initiative has also enabled the school to evaluate the progress of each individual student by using a variety of one-minute assessments known as DIBELS. Through the DIBELS, each student is now provided with an individualized program that both fosters a child's growth in areas of need and challenges him or her to strive in the areas where they are most adept. The commitment of the faculty, staff, and students combined with the support of the community have fostered the growth of an ambitious initiative into a reading program that has the potential to change the academic futures of the children of Peru.
